Funded Projects

Funded Projects Database

The Canada Media Fund wants to keep applicants informed of funding decisions and results throughout the year. The database below contains projects that have been announced during the current fiscal year and all funded projects from prior years. New results will be added as they are published.
There are two types of announcements: Funding Decisions and Funding Results.

For information on funding results prior to 2010, please refer to the archives.

Funding Decisions

Funding Decisions indicate the selection of projects which have qualified for the CMF support but have yet to finalize all contracts. Only programs using a selective, competitive process to allocate funding are subject to a funding decision. These selective programs are: Experimental Stream, Aboriginal, English POV, Francophone Minority, and Diverse Languages.

A Funding Decision is posted on our website when decisions become available. Please note that there is one decision per application closing date. The decisions and funding commitments posted on the website are preliminary, as all requests must undergo a contracting process. Funding is not final until contracts are signed.

Funding Results

Funding results indicate approved and contracted applications for all convergent and experimental stream programs. The funding results are published on a quarterly basis.

Evaluation Jury

We rely on industry experts to contribute to the evaluation of leading-edge Canadian interactive productions.

Jury Members

Information in the funded projects database is correct as of the date of posting. The online database is updated at different times throughout the year, but not currently updated on a regular basis to reflect changes that may occur after posting, including changes in the applicant name or ownership of the project. If a project is subsequently withdrawn or refused funding, it will still appear on this page for informational purposes.

Synopsis

So many of the stories we tell today show the rise of machines turning against humanity. But the fact is, the current responsibility for artificial intelligence lies in human hands, and not the other way around. Agence is a virtual reality experience that explores the intersection of immersive filmmaking and artificial intelligence: challenging the role humanity plays in our pursuit of super-intelligent machines. This dynamic film is a co-production between brand-new Toronto-based studio-lab, Transitional Forms, and the iconic National Film Board of Canada, and uniquely rides the line between an interactive game and an engaging piece of immersive cinema. The experience itself is powered by a series of integrated neural networks, which drive the behaviour of intelligent inhabitants within a virtual world.

Synopsis

The Bogey Ogre Mixed Reality Attraction is a location based activity that takes place within large shipping containers transformed to replicate the look and feel of a run-down midway carnival. The carnival has been overrun by disgusting gremlin-like creatures called Bogey Ogres. Wearing a Magic Leap One mixed reality headset, the participant’s experience is enhanced with character animation, stunning cgi effects and game mechanics created within the Unreal Engine allowing for the illusion of the hideous gremlins to appear throughout the experience. Participants will play classic whack a mole, games like water dunk style activities with their ogre friends, all the while having to clean up vermin crawling along the floor and avoid touching squiggly worms.

Synopsis

The proposed system aims at entertaining a crowd during a live show, by engaging players in a unique and collective game of crowd orchestration. The way it works is that the on-site orchestration control room will interact with the audience through their smartphone so that, for example, they can hold their phone high above their head simultaneously. The motion of each individual phone will then be picked up using various techniques. It then becomes possible to choreograph the crowd, and even to provide a bird’s eye view of said crowd and its various dynamic interactions. The whole is then shown on giant screens near the stage for all to see.

Synopsis

Infini is a “platform without a platform” game in which players take control of a character falling into infinity. The various levels are in wraparound, meaning that whenever a character moves out of the screen on any side, they bounce back on the opposite side. The players must navigate through the different levels while avoiding various obstacles, manipulating the camera’s frame and controlling the falling character in order to reach every goal. Infini takes place in a world where concepts are personified. Players take control of Hope, a prisoner of infinity trying to escape. Infini is thus set in a limitless multiverse. Throughout his adventure, Hope will interact with various other concepts such as Time, Poetry, War, Fatality, Doubt, Peace, Memory and Technology. The game is initially designed for PC/Mac/Linux platforms, and will later be released on Switch, PlayStation and Xbox.

Synopsis

Leveraging the latest technology and focusing on a cutting-edge design, MEMORIES is a third-prison survival game combining RPG elements in a compelling personal narrative, groundbreaking puzzle design, and a wholly unique setting and context to create an exciting, innovative, and unprecedented gameplay experience. Conceived as an allegory, MEMORIES is set in the midst of the battle of the Plains of Abraham. The game takes the player back to September 13, 1759, at a time when the French and British armies were locked into battle. Within moments of the conflict, time freezes giving way to an INTANGIBLE WORLD pulled up above the land by large mechanical constructs creating suspended islands.
