Funded Projects

Funded Projects Database

The Canada Media Fund wants to keep applicants informed of funding decisions and results throughout the year. The database below contains projects that have been announced during the current fiscal year and all funded projects from prior years. New results will be added as they are published.
There are two types of announcements: Funding Decisions and Funding Results.

For information on funding results prior to 2010, please refer to the archives.

Funding Decisions

Funding Decisions indicate the selection of projects which have qualified for the CMF support but have yet to finalize all contracts. Only programs using a selective, competitive process to allocate funding are subject to a funding decision. These selective programs are: Experimental Stream, Aboriginal, English POV, Francophone Minority, and Diverse Languages.

A Funding Decision is posted on our website when decisions become available. Please note that there is one decision per application closing date. The decisions and funding commitments posted on the website are preliminary, as all requests must undergo a contracting process. Funding is not final until contracts are signed.

Funding Results

Funding results indicate approved and contracted applications for all convergent and experimental stream programs. The funding results are published on a quarterly basis.

Evaluation Jury

We rely on industry experts to contribute to the evaluation of leading-edge Canadian interactive productions.

Jury Members

Information in the funded projects database is correct as of the date of posting. The online database is updated at different times throughout the year, but not currently updated on a regular basis to reflect changes that may occur after posting, including changes in the applicant name or ownership of the project. If a project is subsequently withdrawn or refused funding, it will still appear on this page for informational purposes.

Synopsis

ALMOST ALMOST FAMOUS follows a band of rock 'n' roll impersonators on a whistle stop tour of North America. This touching, comedic and raucous road trip takes us deep in the heart of a fame-obsessed subculture: the folks who impersonate rock stars, country music icons and R&B idols and the audience who pay to see them. At the centre of this touring musical carnival is its road manager, and our central character, Marty Kramer, a onetime road manager to some of the biggest bands in the world: Led Zeppelin, the Rolling Stones, the Who, the Guess Who and Roy Orbison.

Synopsis

Some people grapple with the moral challenges of treating human beings decently. Others are just... unpleasant people. "A newborn boy in the US, Italy or Israel is much more likely to live the life of an unpleasant person than a newborn boy in Japan, Norway or Canada" says Prof. Aaron James in his NY Times bestseller. Intellectually provocative and existentially necessary, John Walker explores James' theories and recommendations using clips sourced from Hollywood and news archives, combined with vox pop and ruminations with key observers. The frustration of dealing with unpleasant humans - in the workplace, in government, at home - affects everyone. In an age of rampant narcissism, the time has come for this entertaining and insightful film.

Synopsis

When jazz musician, husband and father Billy Tipton died in 1989, it was discovered that he had a female body. Speculation continues today: was he a pioneering artist, lesbian, trans, genderqueer? This stranger-than-fiction music mystery is an urgent and timely exploration of the elusiveness of gender, told from a queer point of view for the first time. The digital media component will exist as a set of self-contained, interactive stories derived from the experiences of people in the transgender and genderqueer communities, as well as letters written by Billy Tipton himself. The primary form these stories will take is audio podcasts, but a number of the stories will include variations that make innovative use of popular messaging platforms, with their content and approach tailored to the features of those platforms. The podcast medium affords us a delivery system that evokes the intimacy of private, personal conversations and mirrors the secrecy that many gender-non-conforming people have had to endure.

Synopsis

While the number of women in prison rises dramatically in Canada and worldwide, three filmmakers collaborate with women behind bars to imagine what they would have needed in their lives to avoid incarceration. Working together they use cameras, microphones, paintbrushes, animated architectural sketches, and 3D models to envision a more ideal world. They author their own blueprints for a better society, through art. Conventional documentary roles of director, crew, interviewer, and subjects are blurred as the women become increasingly empowered to develop their ideas, experiment with all aspects of filmmaking, and celebrate their own voices. Their creative agency becomes a powerful force, encouraging them to chart the course of their own lives. Alongside the women inside is Kim Pate, recently appointed senator, and past executive director of the Elizabeth Fry Society. She’s spent 30 years advocating for women inside prisons, speaking out for those whose voices have been silenced, and is now positioned to help legislate change. Kim is driven by her conviction that present-day systems of punishment need to be dismantled and replaced with effective support within the community. She believes society has failed marginalized women, while our prisons have become warehouses for the poor and mentally ill. As Kim works with the women to explore alternatives to incarceration, she connects us with the history of debates about punishment, the present-day decarceration community, and the yet unknown work she’s beginning as senator, to realize her radical vision of a world without prison. Not another ‘broken prison’ film, Conviction is a ‘broken society’ film – an ambitious and inspired re-build of our community, from the inside out. The film implicates viewers to question the status quo and consider a radically different approach to incarceration.

Synopsis

The Digital Media Component for Conviction will be a visually provocative outreach and social media strategy that will roll out when we go into production in the fall of 2017. This release strategy is designed to build and maintain momentum starting in production through to the first year of the release. The goal is to build a core audience by the time it hits the festival circuit, when it is broadcast, and for the educational market. This campaign will be robust, encouraging people to dig deeper and think critically about topics presented in the film. Backed by a strong and targeted social media campaign, the film will be firmly situated to have a wide and successful Canadian and international release.

Synopsis

Maybe your dad was cool. Or maybe you are a cool dad. The phrase cool dad has gained a kind of currency in recent years to describe fathers that haven't let parenthood stand in the way of being cool. But what if your dad was too cool? Legendary Canadian jazz crooner Kenny Colman is one such father, and perhaps the ultimate cool dad. Kenny has a forty-year old son Chase, a successful realtor, who has decided to follow in his father's footsteps and become a singer. Kenny thinks his son is crazy to try his hand at show business, especially at mid-life. But Kenny is torn between wanting to help his son get into show biz and trying to stop him. Our documentary COOL DADDY tells the musical story of a man desperately trying to be a good father after a lifetime spent trying to be a great star.
