Funded Projects

Funded Projects Database

The Canada Media Fund wants to keep applicants informed of funding decisions and results throughout the year. The database below contains projects that have been announced during the current fiscal year and all funded projects from prior years. New results will be added as they are published.
There are two types of announcements: Funding Decisions and Funding Results.

Requesting data from the Canada Media Fund (CMF)

The Canada Media Fund may provide additional information on funded projects upon request. Please read the data request guidelines at this link.

Funding Decisions

Funding Decisions indicate the selection of projects which have qualified for the CMF support but have yet to finalize all contracts. Only programs using a selective, competitive process to allocate funding are subject to a funding decision. These selective programs are: Experimental Stream, Aboriginal, English POV, Francophone Minority, and Diverse Languages.

A Funding Decision is posted on our website when decisions become available. Please note that there is one decision per application closing date. The decisions and funding commitments posted on the website are preliminary, as all requests must undergo a contracting process. Funding is not final until contracts are signed.

Funding Results

Funding results indicate approved and contracted applications for all convergent and experimental stream programs. The funding results are published on a quarterly basis.

Evaluation Jury

We rely on industry experts to contribute to the evaluation of leading-edge Canadian interactive productions.

Jury Members

Information in the funded projects database is correct as of the date of posting. The online database is updated at different times throughout the year, but not currently updated on a regular basis to reflect changes that may occur after posting, including changes in the applicant name or ownership of the project. If a project is subsequently withdrawn or refused funding, it will still appear on this page for informational purposes.

Synopsis

Martin Murphy is a young idealist who just graduated from Quebec’s police school. He got a job with Montreal’s police force and was partnered with Richard Bérubé, a jaded patrol officer who was doing just fine on his own. But when Martin accidentally saves Richard’s life during their first shift, Richard takes his partner under his wing. The values the men share aren’t that different, even if they look like it on the surface. Both partners believe in justice, but they have different approaches. So, they carry out justice in their own way, mockingly dubbing themselves the BULLS OF JUSTICE.

Synopsis

Blackman and Rabbin is a 22-minute animated series inspired by Batman’s main popular character, but the series is a parody on the character and takes a slightly funky twist. Unlike other superhero series, Blackman isn’t to be taken seriously—quite the opposite. Blackman is the superhero of the ghetto, with an afro and a look that hearkens back to the 1970s.

Synopsis

Byzance follows the tough life of an ordinary young woman who discovers corruption in her suburban municipal government. Katia became the mayor’s receptionist by doing just the right thing at her job interview. But Katia doesn’t know that much needs to be done to get the house in order—no small feat after thirty years of dirty work. Byzance puts the spotlight on a girl who didn’t finish school and had no money, but who is savvy and courageous. This is the story of an average citizen and the helplessness she feels finding herself with her back to the wall and her illusions shattered as she faces a challenging dilemma: to give up or act to change things. It’s the classic story of David and Goliath—only David is saucy, wears a skin-tight dress and high-heeled shoes, and carries a slingshot buried deep in her Winners handbag.

Synopsis

This adult animated series starts from a place of parody: what if Alvin & The Chipmunks had grown up, gone through hell, quit music and finally decided to get back together in their 40s? But we quickly move beyond parody to explore ideas of family, getting old in a career that prizes youth, the difficulty of maintaining friendships into adulthood, and the greatest theme of them all: how to be a squirrel in a world where most people are not squirrels.

Synopsis

On August 9, 1995, a booby-trapped car exploded in Montreal’s Hochelaga-Maisonneuve neighbourhood. On the sidewalk nearby, 11-year-old Daniel Desrochers was wounded by the debris and died of his injuries, a victim of the merciless war between the Hells Angels and their rivals. Desrochers’s death struck an angry chord among Montrealers, who demanded a large-scale police investigation to bring the murderous conflict to a close. In the fall of the same year, the Carcajou operation began, bringing Montreal police officers, the Sûreté du Québec—Quebec’s provincial police force—, the RCMP and many municipal services together. The goal behind the Carcajou operation was to end the war the bikers waged to gain control of the Montreal drug-trafficking industry. This operation reached its peak on March 28, 2001: Over 1,700 police offers took 73 municipalities across Quebec by storm, arresting 141 Hells Angels members and supporters, who were charged with attempted murder, conspiracy and drug trafficking. The Carcajou operation was the greatest operation against criminal bikers across Canada. When the Nomads, the Hells Angels war squad, led by Maurice “Mom” Boucher and his affiliate group the Rockers, were disbanded, Opération Printemps 2001 [Operation Springtime 2001] ended the war.  The ensuing trials revealed the tenacious hierarchical structure that resulted in murder as an appalling growth strategy. Internal rules, criteria for gaining promotion, criminal acts committed by members, the roots of and circumstances surrounding the war, the importance of cocaine trafficking and the sense of Maurice Boucher’s invulnerability all come to light through the testimony shared by Stéphane Gagné and Serge Boutin, two reformed Hells Angels members, as well as Stéphane Sirois, the main officer at the time. The fictional dramatizations, written based on statements to police officers, are the narrative spine of this documentary, recreating the story of the biker war and Maurice Boucher’s fall from grace.
