Valerie Creighton on why investing in culture is strategically important

May 15, 2017

May 15, 2017, Toronto – As the Government of Manitoba conducts a review of its arts and culture policies and priorities, Valerie Creighton, President and CEO of the Canada Media Fund will address hundreds of Winnipeg business, community and government leaders at the Fort Garry Hotel on May 18 at a lunch hosted by The Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce.

Valerie will speak on how innovation can empower one of Canada’s and Manitoba’s critical sectors. The CMF invests hundreds of millions annually in media enterprises across the country and supports Canada’s audiovisual sector as it embraces the digital shift.

“Canada’s cultural industries are worth over 47 billion dollars,” says Creighton. “Culture has become an incredibly strategic resource in our global, knowledge-based economy. We must ensure the Canadian sector is ready to operate in an open, borderless market. Federal and provincial cultural policy reviews across the country are fundamental in preparing our cultural industries for tomorrow’s challenges and opportunities.”

The CMF and the Winnipeg Chamber support the first comprehensive cultural policy review in Manitoba since the early 1990s, recognizing the value of the creative economy across Canada.

“The Winnipeg Chamber has been calling for a comprehensive review and modernization of provincial arts and cultural policies for some time,” says Loren Remillard, President and CEO of The Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce. “The sector is growing at twice the rate of the overall provincial economy, but there’s still room for improvement – particularly given our policies were written before the arrival of Netflix, live streaming and other forms of digitization.”
