Canada Media Fund launches Slate Development Pilot Program

On Thursday, November 25, 2021, the Canada Media Fund (CMF) launched its Slate Development Pilot Program.  This $3M pilot Program is designed to offer more flexibility to producers in the development of projects in the Documentary and Children & Youth genres.

Eligible applicants will be directly notified by the CMF that they meet the Program’s minimum criteria including (a) received a CMF financial commitment for at least one development project and production project in either the Documentary or Children & Youth genres in the past 5 years and (b) reported at least $75K in gross sales in either of those genres to the CMF in the past 5 years.

Qualifying producers will receive $75K in CMF funding to devote to the development activities of up to three projects without the requirement of an attached Canadian Broadcaster.

With a more modest Program budget, the CMF wanted to first pilot a model for producers with a minimum level of active CMF projects and whose projects have generated domestic and/or international sales.

Further, while restricted to only two of the CMF’s eligible genres, the CMF hopes this pilot Program can be used as a first step in offering more creative funding opportunities in future years to a greater pool of Canadian producers in an increasingly dynamic marketplace.
