28 Canadian digital media production companies receive $6.9 million in funding

The Canada Media Fund (CMF) announced today a contribution of more than $6.9 million to 28 innovative, interactive digital media content and software application companies that applied for funds as part of the Experimental Stream’s development and marketing programs. More than $4 million was distributed amongst 19 projects receiving development support and more than $2 million amongst the 9 projects receiving marketing support.

Combined with the previously announced contribution of over $14 million dollars from the Experimental Stream’s production support, the CMF has contributed some $21 million from the Experimental Stream in the first round of funding for the 2012-2013 year.

Since its creation in 2010, the CMF has contributed more than $80 million from the Experimental Stream to 221 projects.

Development support
A total of 19 projects received development support as part of this round of funding. Of those, seven are from British Columbia, one is from Manitoba, one is from Nova Scotia, four are from Ontario, and six are from Quebec.  For a complete list of projects receiving development support, click here.

Development support provides funding for the conceptualization of an eligible project and/or for the development of the creative and technical elements of an eligible project and the drafting of a product proposal for business development and financing purposes.

Marketing support
Of the 9 projects receiving marketing support in this round, one is from Alberta, two are from British Columbia, two are from Ontario, and four are from Quebec. Of the nine projects receiving marketing support for this round, eight were received production support from a previous funding round. 

Marketing support provides funding for the marketing and promotion of an eligible project such as the creation of national and international marketing campaigns, design costs, creation and market-testing of advertising, use of the Internet for promotion or transactions, and more.
