Budget 2025 investment in Canada’s audiovisual sector will strengthen cultural identity and boost economic growth
Toronto, November 4, 2025 — The Canada Media Fund (CMF) welcomes the generational investment of half a billion dollars in Canadian creators and the cultural economy in Budget 2025, which includes $127.5M for the CMF, $150M for Telefilm Canada, and $26.1M for the National Film Board, over three years. This investment in our screen-based storytellers is a recognition that culture is a national and strategic priority—one that strengthens Canada’s cultural sovereignty, global competitiveness, and shared identity.
“Funding arts and culture is a nation-building project. Investing in the cultural industries shapes who we are as a country and our place on the world stage, while also boosting economic growth, creating jobs across the country, and bringing us together as Canadians,” said Valerie Creighton, President and CEO of the CMF. “In times of uncertainty and division, our stories are where we find connection and empathy. They are the lifeblood of any nation-building effort. Without our stories, the promise of both economic and social returns for Canadians cannot be fulfilled. You can’t have one without the other.”
By enabling Canadian content to compete globally while preserving our unique perspective, these investments in Budget 2025 will also position culture as a strategic trade asset that opens new markets, drives innovation, and strengthens Canada’s brand internationally.
The CMF thanks the federal government for its ongoing confidence in our sector and our organization, and for recognizing that culture is essential to a forward-looking Canada. The additional CMF funding of $127.5M ($42.5M per year) will supplement the CMF’s investment of $346M to support the Canadian audiovisual industry.
