CMF funding fuels $1.8B in industry activity: annual report

Toronto, September 29, 2025 — The Canada Media Fund (CMF) today released Built Different, our annual report for the 2024–2025 fiscal year. The report shows that our investments in Canada’s screen industry fueled $1.8B in industry activity across every province and territory, contributing to nearly 20,000 direct full-time equivalent jobs on Canadian sets, in TV writers’ rooms, and in video game and immersive entertainment studios.

Key takeaways from Built Different

  • Nearly $364M was committed to 1,278 projects in 2024-2025, representing a 4.1 per cent drop in funding and a 14.6 per cent decrease in projects supported.
  • Every dollar invested by the CMF generated 5.1 times its value in public and private financing.
  • Through Sector Development Support funding and strategic partnerships, $6.2M was allocated to 81 initiatives to create opportunities for creators and drive industry growth in Canada’s regions, Indigenous, and underrepresented Communities.
  • More than $48M was invested in interactive digital media projects.
  • For the first time, the CMF’s annual report provides regional data on funding, economic impact, GDP contribution, and job creation achievements in Atlantic Canada, Quebec, Ontario, the Prairies, British Columbia, and Northern Canada.

“The title Built Different emphasizes both the CMF’s transition into a nimbler, more responsive funder and Canada’s changing screen industry,” explains Valerie Creighton, CEO and President, CMF. “In response to declining resources, the CMF has become—and will continue to be—more strategic, more flexible, and more attuned to the rapidly evolving needs of creators in the audiovisual and interactive digital media sectors. Our commitment to championing Canadian and Indigenous stories nationwide remains unwavering. We thank our partners and supporters as we work collectively to invest in Canadian creativity and innovation across the country”.

The CMF thanks our funding contributors—the Government of Canada, and Canada’s cable, satellite, and IPTV distributors—for their continued commitment to our country’s screen industries.
