Canada and Mexico announce codevelopment incentive at Los Cabos
Toronto/Los Cabos, November 9, 2017 - The Canada Media Fund (CMF) and the Mexican Film Institute (Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografía - IMCINE), an agency of the Mexican Secretariat of Culture, announced today the signing of an agreement to establish a dedicated incentive for the codevelopment of audiovisual projects between Canadian producers and Mexican producers. The announcement was made at an event held during the Los Cabos International Film Festival.
To qualify, projects must involve producers eligible under criteria from both organisations, with the CMF determining eligibility for the Canadian portion of a project and IMCINE determining eligibility for the Mexican portion of the project. Projects must be in the drama or children and youth genres. Further details of the program, including key dates, will be announced in the weeks to come.
“Through this incentive, we hope to develop strong partnerships between producers in both Canada and Mexico. By facilitating the creation of quality content that resonates with audiences in both countries and around the world, we strengthen our countries’ already robust ties,” said Valerie Creighton, President and CEO, CMF. “This new agreement is well aligned with the CMF’s objective to establish constructive partnerships with funding agencies in Latin America’s growing markets. We are certain that Canadian producers will benefit enormously by turning their attention to Mexico.”

The total amount of funding available through the Incentive is CAD $130,000 (approximately MXN $1,898,000), with each funding organization contributing half of the funds. The total maximum contribution for each project funded through the Incentive is CAD $25,000 (approximately MXN $379,000).
A delegation of Canadian producers were invited by the Los Cabos International Film Festival to celebrate the announcement and to meet potential coproducers from Mexico. The Canadian delegation is comprised of, Mary Darling (West Wind Pictures), Hannah Donegan (Fathom Film Group), Barbara Doran (Morag Loves Company), Christine Rocheleau (Intuitive Pictures), Valerie Shamash (Eye Steel Film), and Andrew Smith (First Love Films).
