CMF welcomes Government of Canada’s Creative Export Strategy

Toronto, June 26, 2018 – The Canada Media Fund (CMF) welcomes the Government of Canada’s first Creative Export Strategy, announced today by the Honourable Mélanie Joly, Minister of Canadian Heritage, along with her Cabinet colleagues the Honourable François-Philippe Champagne, Minister of International Trade, and the Honourable Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs. The Government of Canada will invest $125M to support creative exports.

"Canadian creators stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the best in the world. In an increasingly borderless and highly-competitive global marketplace, it is essential that we reinforce the mechanisms by which our screen-based creators can market Canada’s exceptional cultural products, develop business opportunities, and export their intellectual property, and by doing so, add billions to our economy," said Valerie Creighton, President and CEO, CMF. "We applaud the government for recognizing the full potential of Canada’s creative sector and its considerable contributions to our economy. It is a sector that generates sustainable jobs and prosperity from coast to coast to coast."

"In line with the government’s vision for a robust creative sector that contributes to the diversification of Canada’s economy and our trading partners, the CMF developed its own Export Pilot Programs, which make $4.4M available in 2018-2019 to Canadian screen-based creators who wish to develop export opportunities. We look forward to our continued collaboration with government partners and industry stakeholders, as we look to expanding the export of exceptional Canadian content," she concluded.
