Canada Media Fund welcomes Government of Canada’s tabling of a bill updating the Broadcasting Act

Toronto, November 3, 2020 – The Canada Media Fund (CMF) today welcomed the introduction of a bill in the House of Commons by The Honourable Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Canadian Heritage, to update the Broadcasting Act. The tabling of the bill follows a report presented earlier this year by the Broadcasting and Telecommunications Legislative Review Panel. It introduces several legislative measures that were part of that report’s recommendations.

“We thank Minister Guilbeault for following through with the government’s commitment to reform the broadcasting sector,” said Valerie Creighton, President and CEO, CMF. “We hope the measures introduced in this bill will support the long-term sustainability of Canada’s screen-based sector, so that our stories continue to reach new and growing audiences here at home and around the world. We look forward to studying the contents of the bill and consulting with our stakeholders on its impact."
