CMF invests over $2.5M in 41 initiatives addressing industry gaps through Sector Development Support program

Toronto, January 24, 2025 – The Canada Media Fund (CMF) today announced the initiatives supported through our Sector Development Support program for the spring and fall 2024–2025 funding rounds.

Our Sector Development Support program offers project-based funding to industry initiatives that demonstrate the potential to positively impact Canada’s audiovisual ecosystem by addressing industry gaps in distinct and identified areas. Sector Development Support funding is awarded on a selective basis and juried by a team of CMF staff, including members of Diverse Communities.

11 out of 24 applications were approved for funding as a result of the spring round of Sector Development Support funding, with nearly $518K allocated to the selected initiatives. 82 per cent of funded projects were designed for Equity-Deserving communities. 82 per cent will be led in English and 18 per cent in French.

The fall saw both the highest number of projects submitted and selected for funding in a single Sector Development Support round—57 and 30 respectively. A total of nearly $2M was allocated to the selected initiatives, also a record for a single round of funding through this program. All of the projects are designed for Equity-Deserving groups. 73 per cent target anglophones and 27 per cent francophones.

Of the 41 selected projects, 13 will be led in Quebec, 12 in Ontario, 10 in British Columbia, two in Nova Scotia, one in Alberta, one in Saskatchewan, one in Manitoba, and one in the Yukon.
