Schitt’s Creek catapults Canadian content to new heights at Golden Globe Awards
Toronto, March 1, 2021 – The Rose family and the townsfolk of Schitt’s Creek did it again. The uniquely Canadian cult show, adored by audiences and critics around the world, took home two Golden Globe Awards.
The Canada Media Fund (CMF) has been a long-standing supporter and contributor of Schitt’s Creek, having provided over $26M in funding towards the production of the show’s six seasons. This is the first CMF-funded project to be recognized at the Golden Globes.
The rising popularity of Schitt’s Creek illustrates the growing demand for Canadian content in the U.S., where content from north of the 49th parallel is the third most popular, after British and Japanese content, according to Parrot Analytics. In the third quarter of 2020, non-U.S. shows accounted for nearly 30 percent of demand south of the border.
“We’re immensely proud of the unparalleled achievement by the creators and talent of Schitt’s Creek,” said Valerie Creighton, President and CEO, CMF. “This is Canadian television at its very best and a testament to the quality of Canada’s creative talent and content. It is one of television’s most iconic shows because of the exceptional way in which it resonates with audiences around the world, its exuberant hilarity, and the gentle way it breaks down barriers.”
“Schitt’s Creek came to screens at a transitional period in television,” she continued. “In today’s fiercely competitive environment, traditional distributors and indeed our whole domestic system, is under increasing pressure. The show serves as an example of IP developed in Canada, by Canadians and illustrates the importance of a system that supports Canada’s creative talent.”
“Canada continues to make its mark. At CMF we invest in content made in Canada and watched by millions globally, while at the same time contributing billions to the economy through jobs and economic spin-off. Congratulations to the creators, the cast and crew of Schitt’s Creek and the CBC. You’ve made Canada proud again,” she concluded.
After last year taking home nine Emmy’s and sweeping the comedy category, Schitt’s Creek is adding two Golden Globes to its impressive list of accolades, which also include dozens of Canadian Screen Awards, and wins at the Critics' Choice Television Awards and the MTV Movie & TV Awards, among many others.
