CMF invests additional $20M in French-language content and underrepresented creators

Toronto, November 8, 2023 – The Canada Media Fund (CMF) today announced the broader framework for distributing the first half of the federal government’s $40M investment in French-language content and underrepresented creators. This funding was announced as part of the federal budget in March 2023.

“This investment will expand opportunities for these creators throughout the country and help bring more Canadian stories to screens at home and abroad. Many thanks to the federal government and the Department of Canadian Heritage for their ongoing commitment to our sector,” said Valerie Creighton, President and CEO, CMF.

Following consultations with a wide range of industry stakeholders, the CMF will allocate the first $20M through existing CMF programs to maximize our ability to effectively distribute funds based on the remaining time left in the 2023-2024 fiscal year and existing program deadlines. $10M will go toward supporting French-language content, and $10M toward underrepresented creators, while accounting for the intersectionality between applicants in both priority groups. Funding will be allocated through the following programs:

Convergent Stream programs

  • Performance Envelope Program (French): $8.5M
  • Pilot Program for Racialized Communities: $2.29M
  • Quebec French Regional Production Incentive: $1.0M
  • Francophone Minority Program: $1.0M
  • Anglophone Minority Incentive: $750K
  • Indigenous Program: $740K
  • Slate Development Pilot Program (French): $500K
  • Diverse Languages Program: $400K

Experimental Stream programs (for underrepresented communities): $2.75M

Sector Development Support: $2.07M
