[VIDEO] Inside the Lunenburg Doc Fest

In this third episode of East Coast in Focus, we travel to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, a UNESCO World Heritage town by the ocean that hosts one of the region’s most beloved screen events: the Lunenburg Doc Fest. We meet with filmmakers, industry leaders, and emerging creators to learn about the creative momentum behind Atlantic Canada’s documentary scene.

We begin the episode with Walter Forsyth, Festival Director and programmer at the Lunenburg Doc Fest, who shares how the event continues to expand its support for Atlantic creators through professional development opportunities and its industry forum, The Dock Market, which connects local creators with the wider industry.

This edition of the Lunenburg festival hosted the fourth cohort of the DOC Atlantic Breakthrough Program, a 10-month initiative supporting six emerging BIPOC filmmakers from across the East Coast. They share with us their profound love for documentaries and what drives them to create impactful work.

We also spend time with Julian Carrington, the new Executive Director of DOC Canada, who tells us about the importance of regional voices in Canada’s documentary scene, and his organization’s priorities as they embark on a new chapter.

And we meet with documentary filmmaker Ariella Pahlke, whose work explores social issues and collective narratives. She highlights how independent films have the power to inspire dialogue and change within communities and beyond.
